An Ergodic Theorem for a Noncommutative Semigroup of Linear Operators

Introduction. The question of ergodicity of a semigroup of bounded linear operators on a Banach space has been reduced, by Alaoglu and Birkhoff [l],1 Day [2, 3], and Eberlein [4], to the study firstly of the ergodicity of the semigroup itself and secondly, of the ergodicity of each element of the Banach space with respect to this ergodic semigroup. In the case of a bounded and commutative semig...

Mean Ergodic Theorems for C0 Semigroups of Continuous Linear Operators

In this paper we obtained mean ergodic theorems for semigroups of bounded linear or continuous affine linear operators on a Banach space under non-power bounded conditions. We then apply them to the wave equation and the system of elasticity to show that the mean of their solutions converges to their equilibriums.

Semigroup Rings and the Extension Theorem for Linear Codes

An extension theorem for general weight functions is proved over nite commutative local principal ideal rings. The structure of the complex semigroup ring associated to the multiplicative semigroup of the ring plays a prominent role in the proof. 1. Background In her doctoral dissertation, MacWilliams [8], [9] proved an equivalence theorem: two linear codes C1; C2 F n de ned over a nite eld F a...

A Dichotomy Theorem for the Adjoint of a Semigroup of Operators

Let T{t) be a Co-semigroup of linear operators on a Banach space X, and let X® , resp. X® , denote the closed subspaces of X" consisting of all functionals x* such that the map t •-» T*{t)x* is strongly continuous for t > 0, resp. t > 0. Theorem. Every nonzero orbit of the quotient semigroup on X*/X® is nonseparably valued. In particular, orbits in X*/X® are either zero for t > 0 or nonseparabl...

An Ergodic Theorem for Stochastic Programming Problems?

To justify the use of sampling to solve stochastic programming problems one usually relies on a law of large numbers for random lsc (lower semicontinuous) functions when the samples come from independent, identical experiments. If the samples come from a stationary process, one can appeal to the ergodic theorem proved here. The proof relies on thèscalarization' of random lsc functions.
